Yankees appear to bench Gleyber Torres for baserunning blunder

NEW YORK — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone appeared to bench second baseman Gleyber Torres after he failed to hustle on a 110.7 mph single off the wall in the second inning of Friday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Torres took a few steps toward first base as he watched the ball fly through the air. It wasn’t until the ball hit the wall that he started running out of the box. Two batters later, Anthony Volpe lined a double down the left field line with Torres on first base. Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas waved Torres home, but he was thrown out at the plate by several feet after slowing down to duck and avoid getting hit in the back by the cutoff throw. Torres leads MLB with 5 baserunning outs at home plate.

His poor baserunning cost the Yankees a run while they were trailing 3-2 in the second inning. Torres played defense in the top of the third inning, but he was pulled after that. YES Network showed a conversation between Torres and Boone in the dugout, where it appeared Boone was telling his second baseman, “I pulled you out of the game.”

This would not be Torres’ first benching this season. In June, Boone benched Torres for poor performance and after he failed to run out a ground ball against the New York Mets. Torres was fighting through lingering groin pain at the time, but the Yankees felt Torres needed to be benched to reset himself.

This story will be updated postgame.
