USMNT’s Sergino Dest set to miss Copa America with knee injury

Sergino Dest is expected to miss the USMNT’s Copa America campaign this summer with a knee injury that could see him sidelined for up to nine months.

The 23-year-old right-back suffered the set-back on Saturday in training with loan club PSV Eindhoven, where he has been an influential performer this season.

Dest, who has 33 senior caps for the U.S. and two goals, has been on loan at the Eredivisie club from Barcelona, where he is contracted until June 2025.

The USMNT begin their Copa America group stage on June 23 against Bolivia.

Dest has made 37 appearances for PSV, who lead the Dutch top flight by nine points, with two goals and seven assists.

The Dutch club would like to make his loan permanent, and a host of other clubs have tracked his impressive form in Eredivisie, but the current prognosis is that the defender may not be fully fit until next year.

A statement on the club’s website on Sunday said: “Sergino Dest suffered an apparently serious knee injury during Saturday’s training. How long the full-back will be sidelined is still being investigated.

“It is almost certain that this concerns a longer period.”
