Takehiro Tomiyasu set to sign new Arsenal contract

Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to sign a new long-term deal with Arsenal.

The club signed the 25-year-old in 2021 on an initial four-year deal with an option of a further year. With Tomiyasu into the final 18 months of that deal, an extension, which has been negotiated over the past few months, is an important order of business for Arsenal.

Tomiyasu has been away representing Japan in the Asian Cup in recent weeks. The nation’s 2-1 loss to Iran on Saturday, February 3 brought their campaign to an end at the quarter-finals, meaning Tomiyasu could return to action for Arsenal against West Ham United this Sunday.

The defender’s return will provide much-needed depth for Mikel Arteta after Oleksandr Zinchenko was substituted at half-time with a calf injury against Liverpool. No time frame was given for Zinchenko’s injury, but Tomiyasu’s versatility is a major benefit to Arteta.

“It gives you a lot of solutions, not only because from right-back he can use both feet, but he can play right centre-back, left centre-back and left-back,” the Arsenal manager said in Tomiyasu’s debut season.

“That gives you enormous variability and it’s the way he has been coached from a really young age, that’s what he says — so for him, left and right is the same.”

Tomiyasu: Arsenal’s attack-building defender could prove useful at centre-back

Earlier this season, Arteta added: “We don’t have a player like him. Defending, (he) is probably the best I’ve seen in many situations.

“His concepts, his principles, the way he applies them, the way he goes into duels. The way he reads danger and resolves urgent situations with a lot of composure.

“His skill to defend, the way his body is built, it makes him a really complete player to do that. It’s really difficult to get past him. He’s always alert, that’s the way he’s been raised and educated — he’s always super focussed. For a defender, that’s a big, big attribute.”
