Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup third-round tie at AFC Wimbledon has been postponed due to flooding at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
The match was due to be played on Tuesday, September 24, and it is unclear whether the match will be rescheduled, moved to a neutral venue, switched to St James’ Park or if Wimbledon will be forced to forfeit the tie.
A video on social media, purporting to show the pitch at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, highlighted significant damage to the pitch, following heavy rain and general flooding around south west London overnight.
Newcastle’s media release says that the match “will now be rescheduled”, but as of yet, there is no confirmation of what happens next.
Eddie Howe was due to face the media this morning, but the press conference was cancelled, in anticipation of the game being postponed.
Finding an alternative date for the fixture will be tricky, given that Wimbledon are due to play successive League Two home matches against Accrington Stanley and Crewe Alexandra on Saturday and Tuesday, October 1, both of which must also be in significant doubt.
Theoretically, the tie could be played during the Carabao Cup fourth-round week, which is from October 28, although a potential fixture backlog may complicate matters.
“Further details (on potential rescheduling), including information for ticket holders, will be announced in due course,” Newcastle said on their website.
