Maatsen called up to Netherlands squad for Euro 2024 after De Jong, Koopmeiners injuries

Ian Maatsen has been called up to the Netherlands squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

Maatsen officially replaces the injured Frenkie de Jong in Ronald Koeman’s squad but his arrival also comes after Teun Koopmeiners was similarly ruled out of the Euros.

De Jong’s withdrawal, with the Barcelona midfielder failing to recover from an ankle injury, was confirmed on Monday night. The KNVB (Dutch FA) then confirmed Koopmeiners’ injury on Tuesday morning after the Atalanta midfielder sustained an injury in the warm-up ahead of Netherlands’ final Euros warm-up game against Iceland on Monday, having initially been named in the starting line-up.

With Maatsen’s addition and the two withdrawals, the KNVB say that “Koeman’s final selection now consists of 25 players”, not adding whether the head coach will call up an additional player.

What is the deadline for replacing injured players in Euro 2024 squads?

Maatsen had been selected in Koeman’s provisional squad for the Euros but was the headline exclusion for the final 26-man squad. The 22-year-old impressed after spending the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Chelsea.

The versatile full-back played 15 matches for Chelsea in the first half of the season but started just one Premier League match. Maatsen then played 23 games for Dortmund, including starting all seven matches in their run to the Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid.

Having initially joined Chelsea in 2018 from PSV Eindhoven’s youth system, he has subsequently had loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Burnley.

He has yet to be capped at senior level for the Netherlands but received his first call-up in September 2023.
