Kristoffer Olsson: Former Arsenal midfielder diagnosed with multiple blood clots in brain

Former Arsenal midfielder Kristoffer Olsson has been diagnosed as having multiple small blood clots on both sides of his brain as a result of an “extremely rare inflammatory condition in his brain vessels,” his club Midtjylland has said.

Olsson, 28, was hospitalised in Aarhus, Denmark after losing consciousness on February 20. The footballer was placed on a ventilator in hospital and has undergone several scans and tests in recent weeks.

“Based on the extensive examinations, scans and tests of recent weeks, the doctors can now determine that Kristoffer is affected by several small blood clots on both sides of the brain,” read a Midtjylland statement.

“This is a result of an extremely rare inflammatory condition in the vessels of the brain. The diagnosis matches the thesis on which the medical specialists have so far worked and treated Kristoffer.

“Kristoffer Olsson’s condition is now assessed as stable, and the doctors continue to see little progress. At the same time, they find that Kristoffer has an increasing degree of consciousness.

“In the coming period, the doctors will slowly try to wean the Swedish midfielder off the ventilator, but he remains hospitalized in intensive care, just as it is still uncertain to say anything about the time horizon of the treatment and the final prognosis.”

Midtjylland CEO Claus Steinlein added of the player’s situation: “I would like to thank the public and the press for having shown warmhearted support, respect and consideration in recent times towards Kristoffer as well as his family and the healthcare staff. It means an incredible amount.

“Also for us at FC Midtjylland, where players and staff are obviously very affected by Kristoffer’s situation. Therefore, I would like to thank you for the fact that our message has been received and continues to be respected.”

Olsson came through Arsenal’s youth academy but made just one first-team appearance for the club, featuring in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion in 2013.

The midfielder subsequently joined Midtjylland, before stints at AIK, Krasnodar and Anderlecht before rejoining the Danish club, initially on a loan deal, in 2022.

The Sweden international has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Danish side this season, assisting five times. He last featured on February 9 against Fredrikstad.

Olsson made the first of his 47 international appearances for Sweden’s national team in 2017. He featured in four of his nation’s games at the delayed European Championships in 2021.
