John Stones returns to England training after recovering from illness

John Stones returned to England training on Thursday after missing Wednesday’s session through illness.

The Manchester City defender is crucial to Gareth Southgate’s European Championship plans and spent Wednesday confined to his hotel room.

But the centre-back returned on Thursday and took part in training, along with the other 25 England players selected.

Stones, 30, was a late fitness scare for Euro 2024 after he needed medical attention following an early challenge from Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson during the 1-0 friendly defeat to Iceland on June 7.

He remained on the pitch for the remainder of the half but was then substituted off for Ezra Konsa during the interval.

As England’s most experienced central defender, Stones is essential to England’s chances of winning Euro 2024, which would be their first major tournament triumph since 1966.

Stones is likely to form part of England’s first-choice central defensive pairing this summer, alongside either Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa or Brighton & Hove Albion’s Lewis Dunk.

England begin their Euro 2024 tournament against Serbia on June 16.
