The Philadelphia 76ers will continue sorely missing defending MVP Joel Embiid, as the team announced Thursday the star center suffered an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee.
The injury revelation came following an MRI after Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, in which Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga landed on Embiid’s left knee in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Embiid immediately clutched his knee in visible agony before exiting the court on his own power. He did not re-enter the game as Philadelphia went on to lose 119-107. Embiid scored 14 points in 30 minutes before exiting.
“Embiid, in consultation with the 76ers medical staff and several leading specialists, will be out through the weekend while a treatment plan is finalized,” the team said in a statement. “Updates will be provided as appropriate.”
The team had already announced that Embiid would miss Thursday’s game against the Utah Jazz.
On Thursday, the NBA fined the Philadelphia 76ers $75,000 for failing to include Embiid on their injury report “in an accurate and timely manner” before the team’s game against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
