The rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks are still years away from a potential return to contention, but the arrival of Connor Bedard has already returned them to prominence in the eyes of the league and its television partners. So it was inevitable that they’d return to the Winter Classic, the NHL’s signature regular-season event.

The Blackhawks will host the Winter Classic next season at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, an industry source said. The St. Louis Blues will be their opponent, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

It marks the Blackhawks’ fourth Winter Classic and a league-leading seventh outdoor game. They’ve previously hosted the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley and the 2019 Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium. They’ve played in the 2015 Winter Classic at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and the 2017 Winter Classic at the St. Louis Cardinals’ Busch Stadium. They’ve also had outdoor games at Chicago’s Soldier Field (2014) and Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium (2016).

The most recent Winter Classic, the Golden Knights versus the Kraken at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park, was the lowest-rated edition of the event, with just 1.1 million viewers, The higher ratings floor of the Chicago market and the global appeal of Bedard, the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, made going back to the Blackhawks an appealing choice for TNT, which is expected to make the announcement official Wednesday night during its weekly NHL broadcast.
