Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is the latest NFL player to be the victim of a home burglary after his house in Anderson Township, Ohio, was targeted while he played against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Monday, according to multiple reports.
No one was injured, and police couldn’t immediately determine which items were stolen from Burrow’s home, per the Associated Press. A person employed by Burrow arrived at the home Monday night and found the house in disarray, including a broken window in a bedroom. The employee called their mother and then 911 was called, according to the AP.
This break-in comes two months after the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were burglarized. Officers responded to a reported burglary on Oct. 6 at Mahomes’ estate in Belton, Mo., according to a police report from the Cass County (Mo.) Sheriff’s Office. A day later, another reported burglary occurred at a residence in Leawood, Kan., believed to belong to Kelce, according to a Leawood Police Department offense report.
The police report for the incident at the Leawood home indicated $20,000 in cash was stolen and $1,000 worth of damage to a rear door.
The NFL sent a memo to teams from the league’s security branch in November warning about the threat of burglary groups targeting the homes of professional athletes.
“The homes of professional athletes across multiple sports leagues have become increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups,” the NFL’s memo said. “Law enforcement officials have noted these groups appear to exploit team schedules to target athletes’ homes on game days.”
The NBA issued a similar memo to its teams last month. Milwaukee Bucks player Bobby Portis’ home in River Hills, Wisc., was broken into on Nov. 2 while Portis was playing a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In an Instagram post, the veteran forward offered $40,000 to anyone with information “that leads to the return of my stolen items.” WISN-TV in Milwaukee reported that local law enforcement authorities noted “striking similarities” between the Portis, Mahomes and Kelce robberies.
