Kylian Mbappe to be assessed ahead of Madrid derby after minor thigh problem

Kylian Mbappe is set to be assessed after being forced off during Real Madrid’s La Liga victory over Alaves on Tuesday with a muscular injury.

The 25-year-old forward was replaced after 80 minutes having experienced minor discomfort in his left thigh, with Arda Guler coming on in his place.

Madrid confirmed he will undergo tests on Wednesday or Thursday ahead of Sunday’s trip to city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti explained Mbappe had requested he be taken off as a precaution.

“He’s fine, he’s fine, a little bit (over) loaded,” Ancelotti said. “He asked me to change to avoid problems.”

Madrid have already contended with a number of injury concerns this season, with Brahim Diaz, Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos all sidelined.

Mbappe scored during Madrid’s 3-2 win on Tuesday, adding his side’s second in the first half following an assist from Jude Bellingham, who played from the start after receiving treatment for a shoulder injury during last weekend’s win over Espanyol.

Lucas Vazquez and Rodrygo were also on the scoresheet for Madrid, who had raced into a 3-0 lead after 48 minutes before Alaves scored twice in quick succession in the final 10 minutes to set up a tense finish.

Mbappe’s goal was his sixth in eight appearances in all competitions this season following his highly-anticipated summer move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Madrid’s victory moves them up to second in La Liga, one point behind Barcelona having played a game more. Sunday’s opponents Atletico are four points behind in third.
